Dynamical aspects of mean field plane rotators and the Kuramoto model

چکیده
The Kuramoto model has been introduced in order to describe synchronization phenomena observed in groups of cells, individuals, circuits, etc... We look at the Kuramoto model with white noise forces: in mathematical terms it is a set of N oscillators, each driven by an independent Brownian motion with a constant drift, that is each oscillator has its own frequency, which, in general, changes from one oscillator to another (these frequencies are usually taken to be random and they may be viewed as a quenched disorder). The interactions between oscillators are of long range type (mean field). We review some results on the Kuramoto model from a statistical mechanics standpoint: we give in particular necessary and sufficient conditions for reversibility and we point out a formal analogy, in the N → ∞ limit, with local mean field models with conservative dynamics (an analogy that is exploited to identify in particular a Lyapunov functional in the reversible set-up). We then focus on the reversible Kuramoto model with sinusoidal interactions in the N → ∞ limit and analyze the stability of the non-trivial stationary profiles arising when the interaction parameter K is larger than its critical value Kc. We provide an analysis of the linear operator describing the time evolution in a neighborhood of the synchronized profile: we exhibit a Hilbert space in which this operator has a self-adjoint extension and we establish, as our main result, a spectral gap inequality for every K > Kc. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification: 82C20, 35P15, 60K35

Phase Transitions and Chaos in Long-Range Models of Coupled Oscillators
We study the chaotic behavior of the synchronization phase transition in the Kuramoto model. We discuss the relationship with analogous features found in the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model. Our numerical results support the connection between the two models, which can be considered as limiting cases (dissipative and conservative, respectively) of a more general dynamical system of damped-dr...

The Kuramoto model has been introduced to describe synchronization phenomena observed in groups of cells, individuals, circuits, etc. The model consists of N interacting oscillators on the one dimensional sphere S, driven by independent Brownian Motions with constant drift chosen at random. This quenched disorder is chosen independently for each oscillator according to the same law μ. The behav...
متن کاملTransitions in Active Rotator Systems: Invariant Hyperbolic Manifold Approach
Our main focus is on a general class of active rotators with mean field interactions, that is globally coupled large families of dynamical systems on the unit circle with non-trivial stochastic dynamics. The dynamics of each isolated system is dψt = −δV ′ (ψt) dt + dwt, where V ′ is a periodic function, w is a Brownian motion and δ is an intensity parameter. It is well known that the interactin...
متن کاملMetastability in the Hamiltonian Mean Field model and Kuramoto model
We briefly discuss the state of the art on the anomalous dynamics of the Hamiltonian Mean Field model. We stress the important role of the initial conditions for understanding the microscopic nature of the intriguing metastable quasi stationary states observed in the model and the connections to Tsallis statistics and glassy dynamics. We also present new results on the existence of metastable s...
متن کاملMean field theory of assortative networks of phase oscillators
Employing the Kuramoto model as an illustrative example, we show how the use of the mean field approximation can be applied to large networks of phase oscillators with assortativity. We then use the ansatz of Ott and Antonsen [Chaos 19, 037113 (2008)] to reduce the mean field kinetic equations to a system of ordinary differential equations. The resulting formulation is illustrated by applicatio...
